Are we going gaga for Greek yogurt? I know I am and with great reason. Greek yogurt, a naturally thicker, richer yogurt, has incredible benefits when applied to the skin. Unlike traditional yogurt, Greek yogurt lacks whey, giving it a more significant concentration of protein and greater health benefits when utilized both internally and applied topically.
When we use Greek yogurt on our skin it immediately begins to strengthen, brighten, soothe and heal the skin thanks to the calcium, protein, live active cultures, and vitamins found in the yogurt. Greek yogurt also contains lactic acid (alpha-hydroxy acid), a natural substance used in skin exfoliation. When left on the skin long enough, skin appears smoother, pores smaller, and fine lines less noticeable. In other words, making you look younger and more refreshed.
The uses for Greek yogurt in the health industry as well as the natural beauty industry keep growing. For instance, Greek yogurt is used in facial masks, as an acne fighter, a skin soother, and to fight psoriasis. Check out the super easy methods and simple recipes below.
Face mask: Take 1tsp of honey and mix with 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt and voila! You have a mask to soothe, smooth, and brighten skin. Leave on the skin for thirty minutes and rinse with luke-warm water. Gently pat skin dry and apply moisturizer if needed.
Psoriasis: Greek yogurt contains calcium, an anti-inflammatory that helps diffuse redness, as well as vitamin B12, a vitamin proven to treat this itchy, flaky condition. Simply slather 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt over affected areas. Leave on the skin for thirty minutes and rinse with luke-warm water.
Brighten: The lactic acid (Alpha hydroxy acid) found in Greek yogurt, a natural exfoliant exfoliates the top layer of skin by removing dead, thickened skin cells. Once this process of exfoliation is complete, newer, healthier skin cells travel to the skin's surface, giving you skin that is smoother, brighter, tighter, and younger-looking.
Fight Acne: The live active cultures, calcium, and natural exfoliants in this thick treat prevent irritation and minimizes redness, thus reducing the formation of acne. A great solution for acne would be to combine plain Greek yogurt and a little tea tree oil and apply to affected areas. Leave on for ten minutes and wipe clean with a damp washcloth.
Dry Skin: Greek yogurt has natural moisturizing factors – thanks to vitamins B6 and B12 – which helps to restore the intercellular matrix (the natural substances that keep healthy skin cells smooth and healthy). To use, take 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt and 1/2 tsp of a natural plant oil such as olive, primrose, or grape seed. Mix and apply to skin. Leave on for thirty minutes and rinse with luke-warm water. Pat skin dry and apply a moisturizer if needed.
Sleep Lines (my favorite solution): Sleep lines are the result of constant pressure on an area for too long, such as while sleeping. The moisturizing benefits of Greek yogurt will help lubricate the under-eye area, thus preventing tugging and pulling during the night. Apply underneath the eye (refrain from putting too close to the eye) and leave on for fifteen minutes. Wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth. Apply moisturizer around eye area if needed.
