5 Easy Steps to Minimize Crow's Feet

Crow's Feet - Those Unsightly Wrinkles

The eyes are often called “windows” but unlike windows, without proper protection, daily stressors from the environment, life, and physical movements such as smiling can cause you to appear older, especially around the eyes. Crow's feet, those unsightly wrinkles beginning at the corners of the eyes and extending outward, affect the delicate skin around the eyes.

Deep eye wrinkles (i.e., crow's feet) acquired their name due to a strong resemblance to a crow’s foot. Think of them as fingerprints – there are no two prints alike. Crow’s feet unlike fine lines, are deep, inset wrinkles and most often, require a more progressive treatment plan. However, with the right steps, you can do it!

How to Minimize and Prevent Crow's Feet

How can you beat crow's feet? To win the fight against crow's feet, begin by protecting the area around the eyes with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. The sunscreen you chose should have an SPF rating of 15 or higher. Your sunscreen should be applied 15 minutes before exposure to the sun. Additionally, crow’s feet, although different from premature wrinkles, are caused by some of the same stressors known to promote aging. Stressors such as aggregated sun damage, a depletion of healthy elastin, and the loss of collagen result in the formation of deep eye wrinkles. So to increase your chances of success and minimize irritation to the eyes, utilize a mineral-based sunscreen around the eyes daily. Sunscreens with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, two mineral actives, are safe and efficient.

Along with a sunscreen, create a beauty regimen that is gentle on the skin. Use products that are free of fragrances, dyes, and other irritants like alcohol. To get you started, use products that are rich in antioxidants, anti-irritants, nutrients, and vitamins. These well-formulated products are perfect for all skin types and when incorporated into your daily routine – can work to reduce crow’s feet, heal irritation, minimize discoloration, and increase collagen production. In other words, making you look younger!  Some great examples from Celsaderm are C-Pom Toning Mist and Antioxidant Stem Complex.

Are there any other steps you can take? Absolutely! Exfoliation is a process that you should not overlook. Exfoliants such as an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta hydroxy acid (BHA) works to smooth the texture of the skin, reduce under-eye discoloration, and stimulate collagen production, all benefits that have been proven to deliver healthy vibrant skin! To use, apply evenly to the under eye only. To learn how exfoliation can smooth your skin read this article.

To compliment your daily application of antioxidants and exfoliants, an over-the-counter retinol solution will work surprisingly well at softening the appearance of wrinkles and smoothing the skin.

Consider Botox

Consider Botox! Topical products are great but from time to time, non-surgical treatment procedures such as Botox are needed. Botox, when properly administered by a licensed dermatologist, works to smooth crow’s feet and maximize firmness – making them almost undetectable. The results of Botox can last between 3 to 6 months and with a moderate financial investment and proper sun protection, the skin around your eyes will appear smoother, brighter, and firmer. And you my friend will look years younger. Consider Botox. The results truly are remarkable.
